1. How do I prevent frozen pipes?

In cold weather, remove hoses from hose bibs on the outside of the house. Also block outside vents in the foundation of your home. This will prevent cold air from getting into the crawl space and freezing pipes.

2. If my pipes do freeze, how should I thaw them?

Use a hairdryer on the area where you believe the pipe is frozen.

3. What should I look for when my toilet continues to "run"?

Remove the tank lid and check to see if the flapped chain is too tight or if the ball cock float is too high.

4. What shouldn't go down the garbage disposal?

Never put fibrous foods such as asparagus, artichokes, celery, etc. into your disposal. Be sure to run plenty of cold water down the disposal while it's operating.

5. What should I do to keep my disposal clean and odors away?

When used properly, garbage disposals are made to clean themselves. Odors occur when food is allowed to sit in them for any length of time. To keep odors away, be sure to always run your disposal with a full stream of cold water. Keep the cold water running for a few seconds after you turn the disposal off. This will ensure all debris inside the disposal is washed away. If you do experience a bad odor in your disposal, try putting lemon or orange peels into your disposal. Grind and run with plenty of cold water.
